Award Winning Wildlife Artist And Conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey To Launch “Panama Paradise: Edge of Conservation”

New Film Project – Panama Paradise: Edge of Conservation

Internationally known wildlife artist and conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey, who took audiences across the planet in the award-winning Portraits from the Deep documentary series, is launching several new film projects in 2012, starting with Panama Paradise: Edge of Conservation due for release this spring.

“A critical part of the mission of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is education and film is a superb way to deliver the messages of science and conservation,” said Dr. Harvey. “Only through understanding the issues can we hope to save our seas for future generations.”

In Panama Paradise: Edge of Conservation, Dr. Harvey and two-time Emmy Award winning producer George C. Schellenger takes the audience on an expedition where the jungle meets the sea in an explosion of life, an unforgettable vision of Panama and its surrounding waters.  The film will show how scientists are working against the clock to protect a land and sea paradise that attracts visitors from around the world.

“The film will feature massive storms, majestic marlins and even protective dolphins—all part of an adventure that takes place above and below the water,” said Dr. Harvey, whose latest documentary “The Mystery of the Grouper Moon” played a pivotal role in protecting one of the last know spawning areas of the Nassau grouper. An updated version of the documentary is in production. Also, a film revealing scientific breakthroughs in the study of migration patterns of satellite-tagged Tiger Sharks is underway for a 2012 release.

Dr. Harvey and Schellenger have collaborated on several projects recently, including “This is Your Ocean: Sharks”, a 44-minute documentary depicting sharks in their natural environment. This film captures the adventure and passion of shark diving and evokes a call for conservation and protection for the species that today is threatened by over fishing for a growing demand for shark fin soup.

Netflix bringing instant streaming to Latin America, global domination plan on track

11e45ef230sphere.jpg Netflix bringing instant streaming to Latin America, global domination plan on track The Boquete Times Boquete PanamaSoon enough, most of the western hemisphere will be able to enjoy Netflix Watch Instantly without the need for proxies and work-arounds. Later this year the company will add 43 countries in Central and South America, and the Caribbean to its list of supported locales. It will also wrap up its North American expansion by streaming flicks into the heart of Mexico. When exactly folks in Brazil and Trinidad will be able to sign up, and how much it will cost when it launches are still up in the air at the moment. One thing is certain though — while Hulu is striking deals with the likes of Miramax and the Criterion Collection to bolster its library of feature length films, Netflix is building a global empire.

Netflix CEO looking into streaming-only option for US ‘over the coming months’

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings may be stumbling over a publicity misstep or two since launching in Canada just yesterday, but he sure knows the right mea culpa to give. In a blog post entitled “Apologies” — which, amusingly enough, is published just after “We Blew It” — the King of the Red Envelope says, “we are looking at adding a streaming-only option for the USA over the coming months.” No prices are discussed, but our educated guess would place it parallel to Canada’s streaming-only plan, $7.99 monthly. Would we be willing to drop all physical media in exchange for at least one extra dollar per month? Now that’s a good question.

Vudu starts offering special features with Avatar

What does the Vudu HDX version of Avatar have that the Blu-ray version doesn’t? That’s right, special features. Typically you don’t get ‘em with a digital download, but Vudu figured the release of Avatar is the perfect time to change that forever. We’re not exactly sure what features will be available, but at free, they are priced just right. This is yet another sign that Hollywood is warming up to digital delivery — the first sign was that digital download customers dont’ have to wait another 28 days like Redbox and Netflix — and Vudu also reminds us that if you want to stream Avatar in HD it is them or the Playstation as all the other streaming services will only offer the movie in SD — we don’t know about the Playstation service, but Vudu’s HDX certainly qualifies as real HD. Another pictures of the Vudu interface after the jump.

Skip the DVD Trailers & Go Straight to the Movie

fb1e2c58ebthumb.jpg Skip the DVD Trailers & Go Straight to the Movie The Boquete Times Boquete PanamaYou buy an original DVD movie (or get one on rent), pop it in your DVD player and quickly grab a snack from the kitchen hoping that the movie would play right away.

Obviously, that won’t happen as you’ll have to patiently sit through all the movie trailers, video ads, copyright notices, FBI warnings and lot of other stuff before the movie starts playing on your TV screen.

These trailers and commercials can run anywhere between 10-15 minutes so you are likely to be done with your snack by the time the actual movie begins playing. And they appear even more annoying if you are trying to watch the same DVD movie for the second or the third time.

How to Skip Trailers and Ads on DVD Movies

DVD discs often have a UOP flag set that is used for displaying copyright notices, FBI warnings and commercials that cannot be skipped. However, if your DVD player hardware ignores the UOP flag, the commercials can be bypassed.

The easiest way to skip (or fast forward) all the ads, warnings and trailers from the DVD movies is this — just press the Stop button on the DVD remote followed by the Menu button and it will take you straight to the main menu from where you can play the movie.

However, if this age-old method for skipping trailers doesn’t work with your DVD player, try an alternate trick from Tom Merritt.

Trick One – For DVD Players

When the first trailer on the DVD starts playing on your screen, press the STOP button of your DVD remote twice followed by the PLAY button. That’s STOP –> STOP –> PLAY and it should take you directly to the movie skipping all the trailers and ads.

Trick Two – For DVD Players

If the above trick doesn’t work for your DVD, try this sequence suggested by Richard Rider. Instead of pressing the STOP button on your DVD remote twice, press it three times followed by PLAY and it should skip all the trailers and previews. To repeat, the sequence becomes STOP –> STOP –> STOP –> PLAY.

Trick Three – For Laptops and Desktops

If you are watching the DVD movie on your laptop computer where you don’t have an external remote to skip the ads, try Rick Brodia’s suggestion. Insert the DVD into the computer and when the first splash screen appears, hit the Stop button.

I popped in a DVD and fired up Windows Media Player. When the first splash screen appeared, I clicked the player’s Stop button. Then I clicked Play, and the disc skipped ahead to the previews. I repeated the process — Stop, then Play — and it advanced to the FBI warning. I did it a third time and presto: I landed right on the movie’s menu screen.

You won’t just save time by skipping trailers but it will also save you some battery life if you are watching the DVD movie on a laptop while on the move.

Give it a shot and do share if these tricks work on your DVD player / computer.
