When I was Venice, I visited the beautiful new Google offices there.  It’s where most of the photos team is based.

We had a fun little giveaway where I invited a winner to join me for the day at Google.  The winner was Cam Meadows, so he joined me and Tom Anderson on a grand tour around the offices.  Along the way, our host, Brian Rose, led us to the Google Holodeck.

It’s fully integrated into the latest version of Google Earth, and you can zoom and fly around anywhere in the world.  I grabbed the controls to zoom into San Francisco then asked him to smile while I grabbed a quick photo!

Should Schools Be Named After Steve Jobs?

sj Should Schools Be Named After Steve Jobs? The Boquete Times Boquete PanamaA high school in Bulgaria is reportedly going to dump Lenin as its namesake for Steve Jobs. And if it does, it probably won’t be the first school named after the Apple co-founder.

If reports are to be believed, a technical secondary school in Bulgaria would topple communist politician Vladimir Ilyich Lenin as its namesake in favor of the symbolic innovation and insight offered by Steve Jobs. (Or a famous scientist. The decision hasn’t been made, yet.)

The first school named after the “think different” pioneer was probably a high school in Mexico, which re-named itself “Steve Jobs” in 2008. Google Maps shows a school at that address with that name.

Apple has always had a strong role in education and iPads are increasingly replacing books in schools from kindergarten to college. So it’s not surprising that a school wants to name itself after recently-departed Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

There is already Steve Jobs Day in the state of California, honoring innovations that “transformed an industry, and the products he conceived and shepherded to market have changed the way the entire world communicates,” said Governor Jerry Brown.

What, if anything, do you think should bear his name?

Firefox 6 For Mac Is Officially Released, Download It Now

In line with their promise to stick to a much more aggressive release schedule, Mozilla has just officially released version 6 of their popular Firefox browser.

Available for Mac as well as PC and Linux, Firefox 6 boasts a supposed 230% speed increase and support for new HTML5 and CSS3 elements.

That’s pretty much it, though. Part of going for a more aggressive release schedule means that future Firefox releases will be more like Chrome, where the difference between Firefox 6 and 7 might be just a couple of tweaks and a new feature or two.

One big omission of Firefox 6? No support for Lion’s new full screen mode. Boo, Mozilla. Boo!

Google’s self-driving cars take TED attendees for a wild ride

Google gave folks a brief glimpse at its super secret self-driving cars last fall, but nothing like what it’s just showed off at the TED conference that’s happening this week in Long Beach, California. The company is not only actually letting attendees inside the autonomous car for a first-hand demonstration, but it’s intentionally stepped things up to an “aggressive” level to show just how capable the car really is — we’re talking squealing tires and really tight cornering (all on a closed course, naturally). Head on past the break for a view from both inside and outside of the car courtesy of Search Engine Land.

Google Maps routes itself to v5.2, gets hotpot tweets, Latitude ‘pings’ and better search results

We’re still waiting for someone to one-up Google Maps Navigation, but until that fateful day shines down upon us, it looks as if we’ll have to once again point our attention to El Goog. Google Maps has just been updated to version 5.2, with three main additions to focus on. For one, the new edition allows users to tweet their reviews of places and share recommendations with Hotpot friends. Next up, there’s Latitude pinging, which enables you to send a quick message to a nearby Latitude friend rather than having to use a text or call; they’ll receive an Android notification from you asking them to check in at a place, and when they check in using your request, you’ll get a notification right back so you know which place to go to meet up with them. Finally, a new ‘Search More Places’ button has been added under the standard list of places to check in at, which ought to prove helpful in highly congested cities with multiple places stacked atop one another. Hit that Android Market link below to get your update going, and if you’re fixing to use that new ping feature, you and your friends will need v5.2 (or higher, if you’re reading this in the year 2043).

Choose your Hotel Room with a Perfect View

The Taj Mahal is visible from all the different guest bedrooms at Hotel Amar Vilas in Agra so it really doesn’t matter which room number they allot you at the time of booking. You get a picture perfect view from every room but, obviously, that won’t be the case with most other hotels of the world.

When you make an online reservation for a hotel, the travel website will almost always have some pictures of the hotel exteriors and that of certain rooms to help you get an idea of the actual property before you confirm the booking.

But you still miss out on certain points. For instance, some rooms may have a better view than others. Or some rooms may have a more convenient location inside the hotel than others and this is something you can only figure out once you are physically at the hotel.

Room 77, a promising web start-up that made its debut at LAUNCH the previous month, is trying to fit the missing pieces here. The service offers virtual views of hotel rooms, what would the scene be like if you were standing in the balcony of a room, to help you make better choices.

For instance, here you can compare the view outside two different rooms that are on the same floor of the hotel – you would obviously want to avoid #3013.

Using Room 77 is simple – it displays an interactive floor plan on the lower Google map and when you click any of the room numbers on that floor map, it generates a virtual view using data from Google Earth. You may also change floors and the external view will change accordingly.

It’s a pretty innovative service but their room database is currently limited to select luxury hotels in London and a dozen or so U.S. cities. Going forward, they also plan to have actual photographs of room interiors as submitted by guests who check into those rooms.

Google pulls Recipe View out of the oven

Okay, so this Google announcement doesn’t come with some dessert-themed upgrade, but we guarantee you’ll be able to find recipes for cupcakes, gingerbread, and maybe even ice cream. Yep, those always-hungry folks in Mountain View are rolling out a new Recipe View tab, which will not only narrow your search results to show cooking recipes, but will also provide some pretty awesome ways to filter down your inevitable query for spaghetti and meatballs. The image above pretty much explains it all — you can filter down by your ideal ingredients, cooking time, and even the calories count. Google’s even making it easier for recipe website developers to add markups to their webpages so that content can eventually appear all nicely sorted on the new search pages. It should all be rolling out as we speak in the US and Japan, which really means you have no choice but to cook tonight.

Google Social Search update makes your friends more relevant, difficult to ignore

Google’s been talking up its Social Search function for sometime, but up until now your friends’ tweets probably haven’t made it to the top of your search results — unless of course you’re besties with TMZ, and you’ve been searching the Miley Cyrus bong salvia rip again. Thankfully, it looks as if that could change with El Goog’s latest update to the socially minded search function, which now mixes updates from your contacts’ various online accounts, like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, in with the standard search fair — pulling them up from their previous position at the bottom of your results. Google’s also included a photo and annotation to show the origins of relevant links, and given you the ability to manage how you connect your accounts — either publicly through your profile or privately through your account. The new functions started rolling out yesterday, which means you could be seeing a whole lot more from those contacts you regretted friending in the first place. Isn’t social media a wonderful / disastrous thing?

Have you found your Googleganger?

One night filmmaker Jim Killeen was ego-surfing on the web and found at least 24 men who shared the same name with him.

Out of curiosity, he tracked down and contacted six of the other Jim Killeens only to realize that these people, though strangers from different countries, were actually quite similar. His experiences are available in a documentary titled Google Me (see trailer above).

Who is a Googleganger?

The act of searching your own name on Google is ego-surfing and if you come across people who share your name, they are called your googlegangers. In Jim’s case, he found that he had 24 googlegangers on the web.

Googleganger defines the act of searching your own, or someone else’s full name on Google, and finding someone completely different, but sharing the same name.

The term Googleganer has been around for a while (see Urban Dictionary) and earlier this week, the Macquarie Dictionary named ‘googleganger’ as the word of the year.

A simple name search on Facebook reveals that I probably have a few thousand Googlegangers online (the downside of having a common name) though I have met only one of them virtually. Have you found your Googleganger?
